Sinner In Your Eyes

You tell me what I do just is not right
And that my sins will be my downfall
The law is passed down from a height
That we don’t know exists at all

We don’t do any harm to anyone
But we’re vindicated
And through the things that we have done
We are often hated

By whose ethics do we abide?
With whose morals do we side?
If I don’t believe what you do
Why should I refrain to please the likes of you?

In your eyes what I do is not acceptable
And I offend your religion
But morals are corruptible
And I don’t share your vision

We don’t believe we’ve any done any wrong
But we’ve been chastised
We feel excluded and we don’t belong
We’re only sinners in your eyes

Who writes our legislation?
Do we live by ancient proclamation?
If I don’t believe what you do
Why should I refrain to please the likes of you?

Because of a book written years ago
And a speech a guy made on a hill
And a man who heard a voice from afar
You can make of that what you will

Does religion promote compassion?
Or an undercurrent of repression?
If I don’t believe what you do
Why should I refrain to please the likes of you?
